How to Tell If Windshield Replacement Is Necessary

Windshield Replacement

There will be many times that it will be obvious that your windshield will need the services of an auto glass repair expert. But sometimes it isn't always so cut and dry. You don't want to make the wrong decision and put yourself in jeopardy though.

Or the safety of others either! Make sure you know exactly when you should repair and when you should replace it.

LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!

If a crack is located directly in front of the driver's view there will be a permanent blurring. No matter how skilled a repair job is done with the crack, there will always be a dent that will be a distraction.

If this were not in direct line-sight of the driver it would be a different situation but being there it requires a complete replacement. This can not be overlooked.

Other trouble spots are not in the driver's view but may still require replacement, as well. Many points around the very edges could cause the entire frame to become unbalanced and come loose.

Also, many cars have sensors for driver assistance, weather systems, and braking. If any of these near the break the windshield would need to be replaced rather than simply repaired.

CRACK VS CHIP

A chip is a damage from an impact, a flying rock or pebble or example. They can be minor problems if they are small enough and could be a simple repair when caught at the right time.

However, if they are too large or they are left untreated they can be and often are the starting point for cracks.

A crack is the complete separation of glass at particular points and is much more serious of a problem.

You must address a repair or replacement as quickly as you can but if something is keeping you from going right this moment, there are things you can do to keep it from growing and give you a little time.

TEMPERATURE STRAIN

The excessive cold will put immense strain on any damage that has already been done to any windshield. This is especially true when it comes to dealing with cracks, be it excessive sun or excessive cold.

Expansion and/or contraction will cause continuing problems that have already started with the chips and cracks. This needs to be watched closely to prevent further damage from occurring.

POLYVINYL BUTYRAL SEPARATION

Polyvinyl Butyral or PVB is a sheet that is adhered to your windshield to act as an extra layer of protection in the instance of an accident. This substance gives the glass resistance from projectiles, like a drive in a crash for example.

It also would keep the glass from shattering into pieces and slicing individuals. It be fairly obvious when the PVB layer is becoming split from the glass layer. When this is beginning is it very important that the windshield is brought in from replacement.
