What is the Darkest Legal Window Tint in Ontario?

Window tinting in Burlington Ontario

Though it has been two years since new auto tinting laws in Burlington came into effect, many drivers are still unsure about how dark they can tint their car's windows. At Canada Auto Glass & Sunroofs, we provide window tinting in Burlington and we want all of our clients to be confident that they are following the law when driving.

The new regulations only apply to vehicles built after January 1, 2017. However, it is a good idea to follow these guidelines even if you drive an older car, as they have been put in place for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. Here's everything you need to know about the darkest legal window tint for all of your car's windows.

WINDSHIELD AND FRONT SIDE WINDOW TINTING IN BURLINGTON

Under Ontario's vehicle inspection regulations, windshields may not have any level of aftermarket tint applied at all. It is, however, acceptable for Original Equipment Manufacturer tinting of up to 70% VLT to extend 75mm from the top of the windshield.

While the regulations do not expressly prohibit tinting of the front side windows, they do state that the windows must not be "substantially obscured." This is because the interior of the vehicle must be clearly visible when viewed from the outside of the vehicle.

It is generally not recommended that auto tinting in Burlington be applied to the front side windows as whether or not it "substantially obscures" the view from the outside will be left up to the determination of the individual officer.

BACK SIDE WINDOWS AND REAR WINDOW TINTING IN BURLINGTON

The new regulations did not impose any new limits on back side windows and rear window tinting, which previously did not have any restrictions. The only stipulation which already existed and remains on the books today is that a vehicle must have left and right external rear view mirrors if the rear window is tinted.

There are many reasons why people choose window tinting in Burlington for their rear and back side windows, such as less glare and greater visual comfort. By blocking the sun's UV rays, you will also reduce how warm your vehicle gets and thereby reduce your cooling costs by as much as 30%. Reducing the amount of UV rays that enter through the windows will help reduce the fading to your vehicle's interior and provide you with more privacy when driving as well.
